Yahoo News Philippines Hacked

When I opened a Yahoo! News Headline today that says "Tons of dead fish found in Batangas" I was taken to a page that says

alert("Hacked By d4rkb1t!")

If some Internet junkie with lots of time to burn can manage to hack Yahoo! News, I wonder if my Yahoo! email account is safe from being meddled. How safe are our private conversations on email servers? Can I trust my passwords and other VERY important data aren't thrown out over the Internet ready for an Internet junkie to take advantage of?
